Hello,
I am not opposed to genuine "For Sale" notices from students, much the same
as are stuck up on walls all over uni - and in fact I welcome them as I do
like to constantly monitor current prices. I don't regard the individual's
efforts to sell their goods as "spam" usually, yet there is also a heap of
what I do regard as spam that gets through to students on email, as I'm
sure everybody would agree about.
I'm writing this prompted by Julie Diamond who has just posted to student
list obviously in great anger and frustration, and probably understandably
so - as spam is often very annoying to all of us, especially the "Nigerian
letters" and all the stupid get-rich-schemes and work-at-home schemes which
for a fair bet are all 100% written by con artists and pyramid-sales
sellers, as likewise about slimming and health foods, and so on ad
infinitum ~~~~ in a word it's all coming from snake-oil salesmen or women.
But also there is a special class of spam which is peculiar to plaguing
people from UNSW and that is KOREAN JUNK MAIL --- I am getting more and
more of this as time goes on, from ever more and more diversified sources.
Clearly they are mass-using, and on-marketting, our z-numbers as well as
likely using other methods to harvest email addresses. A highly
unscrupulous but very simple thing to do. We know this is so because one
of the culprits at one stage, if you remember, ever copied to this list one
of the ads selling such CD compilations of email addresses. And that
particular email came to me addressed to a suite of consecutive z-number
addresses, quite obviously just block emailing through the student body!
Now just about all e-lists have junk advertising mail or other spam mail
pass through them. Some have more than others (some
moderators/administrators try to battle the problem more than others perhaps).
But PLEASE never blame or abuse the list administrators, as they are just a
student volunteers. Don't blame the list admin for the fact that entities
like:
> [EMAIL PROTECTED]
> [EMAIL PROTECTED]
,,,, plague us. If annoyed and you want to do something, it is better
perhaps to take direct action and channel your energy into tracking down
who cctpg.org, or other culprits, are [use 'extended headers' to find the
real senders as often the "From:" line will be faked or just a nonsense?].
You can try reporting spammers to their ISPs (who may or may not shut them
down - but even if they do then the spammer only changes identity and
resumes under a different identity), or report the spam to any of the many
vigilante outfits who like to maintain blacklists which others (e.g. ISPs)
may then can use to block spammers or block-censure ISPs allowing open relay.
Second "pretty-PLEASE" request is to not be ever sending irksome messages
to lists that say things like:
"Unsubscribe", "UNSUBSCRIBE ME", "UNSUBSCRIBE ME NOW", "TAKE MY ADDRESS OFF
YOUR LIST NOW", "If you don't take my name off your list I'll ....", or
anything of that genre.
There's two reasons not to ever send such messages (unless you are in dire
dire dire need .... and have already tried valiantly to unsubscribe without
success for whatever reason).
First reason is that such messages only disturb ALL members of the lists
whereas they could have been sent privately to the list owner alone.
Second reason is that EVERY message that ever passes via the list
distribution system (and certainly in the case of is-noticeboard) contains
at the foot the precise instruction necessary for unsubscribing oneself
(i.e. "To UNSUBSCRIBE, send an e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with
'unsubscribe is-noticeboard' in the body of the message (NOT IN THE
SUBJECT!!!").
The general premise of all this is that any university student smart enough
to get themselves onto a list is also smart enough to get themselves off it
unassisted - and by following the stated instruction for doing so. This
seems almost as though it should be a true-ism to me; and that collectively
we shouldn't pander too much to the ?lazy souls or hungry ghosts who do not
pay attention and simply demand that somebody else take the trouble to
"Unsubcribe me" when they could easily do it themselves.
Anyway that is my opinion on these constantly recurrent matters.
The BIGGEST issue to my mind is the growing volume of Korean junk mail
inflicting holders of z-number email addresses, and what if anything can be
done about that. Uni comms people ARE aware of the problem but they don't
know what can be done about it .. cannot just filter ALL Korean mail at
central node as there is heaps of it that would be perfectly valid and legal.
On a TOTALLY UNRELATED matter I am looking for some cooperative sharing of
"English for Chinese" - I would like to swap on a time-for-time basis (no
money changes hands) learning a bit of Chinese ("Nihow, wo-man kwai Loqh"
is about all I know now) in return for help or teaching of English --- the
most useful help I can imagine is the picking and correction of errors in
written English ~~~ which can immensely improve the final quality of essays
or theses, or other works in progress. Contact me privately please should
you be potentially interested in such exchange cooperation.
And thanks to Julie too, for at least making me think about all these spam
issues and write this wonderful note (blush, I'm so modest too) that would
do any wombat proud.
Kind Regards
John, z2204020
(external & continuing part/time, masters of social science student)
