An important message from the Vice-Chancellor about the tragic deaths of two of our students

17 September 2003

"I am deeply saddened to advise the UNSW community that the two men found dead in Barker Street, Randwick on Monday were students of this University.

"Their identities were only confirmed by police this morning.

"The students, Tan Poh Chuan and Tay Chow Lyang, were fourth year students in the Faculty of Engineering.

"Tan was a Bachelor of Engineering (Telecommunications) student and Tay was a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical Engineering) student.

"I extend my sincerest condolences to their families in Singapore and to their many friends here on campus.

"I am in the process of contacting the students' families. The University will do everything it can to assist and support them.

"A senior member of staff is now in Singapore to help relatives with arrangements during this difficult time.

"The University is doing everything it can to help police with their ongoing inquiries. We will continue to work closely with them.

"University counselling services have been made available to staff and students who have been affected by these tragic events.

"From today until Monday, the counselling service will be operating a special walk-in service between 10am and 4 pm for any students and staff wanting someone to talk to about the recent deaths. You are welcome to request a counselling session at other times.

"Book an appointment by visiting the counselling service on Level 2, East Wing Quadrangle Building or phone 9385 5418 between 9 am and 5 pm. You can also access counselling information via our
counselling website .

"Staff can also request counselling services through the Employee Assistance Program on 1300 360 364.

"While this incident did not occur on campus, students can rest assured that their security and wellbeing is of paramount concern to UNSW. If you have any concerns about security issues at UNSW please contact security liaison officer Mark Sawszak on 9385 7222. The University provides several security services to students around the clock. More information is available at the
UNSW Security homepage.

"A commemorative service will be held for the students at 11.30am tomorrow, with people congregating from 11am, in the Vice Chancellor's garden. The garden is located through the doors of NewSouth Q. The UNSW community will be asked to observe a minute's silence at 12 midday. For further information contact Ronnie Yeoh, president of the Singapore Students' Association, mob 0404 897 228."
