Angry crowds gathered round Abu Shamiyeh's bombed car
Militant Palestinian group Hamas has threatened to avenge the killing of one of its members in an Israeli air strike in Gaza City on Sunday.

Khaled Abu Shamiyeh, 30, died when his car was destroyed by a missile in a northern district of the city.

An unarmed Palestinian man was shot dead by the Israeli army in an incident near a Jewish settlement in the central Gaza Strip.

His body was handed over to medics, according to Palestinian sources.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said the man was shot dead as he was crawling towards an army outpost near Gush Katif settlement bloc, south of the Palestinian town of Deir al-Balah.

The Israeli army said Khaled Abu Shamiyeh had been a key figure in the production of rockets fired by militants at the Israeli town of Sderot.

Early on Monday, militants fired a rocket at Sderot, hitting a residential area but causing no casualties.

Israel regularly targets militants in Gaza, as well as metal workshops it suspects are used to produce weapons.

Israeli human rights group B'tselem estimates that more than 150 militants have been assassinated by Israel since September 2000. More than 100 bystanders have also been killed in Israel's attacks.

A Hamas spokesman, Mushir al-Masri, vowed revenge and said the organisation would will teach Israel "a painful lesson".
