MTUC, PKR, PAS, DAP dan lain-lain persatuan akan
menganjurkan demo besar-besaran di Lebuhraya Damansara
Puchong pada AHAD 7 Januari 2007 untuk membantah
kenaikan tol. Kepada mereka yang prihatin dan ingin
turut serta dalam demo ini sila ikuti perkembangan
terkini di internet dari masa ke semasa.
Toll hike: Demo planned for Jan 7
KUALA LUMPUR, 18 Dis (Hrkh) - A series of events which
culminate with a demonstration on Jan 7, will be
organized by the three major opposition parties as
well as non governmental organizations and trade union
to oppose recently announced toll hike.
The demonstration was planned to be held at the
Lebuhraya Damansara-Puchong(LDP) - one of the five
stretches of highway which saw some 20 to 60 percent
increase in its rates.
Prior to the demonstration, a memorandum will be sent
to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi in
Putrajaya at 10am on Dec 27 to oppose the hike.
This will be followed by a forum at 8pm to be held at
the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall here on the same
day.
A committee against the toll hike chairman Syed Shahir
Syed Mohamud said he opposed the hike and expressed
disappointment that the government had decided to go
ahead with the hike after previous fuel, water and
electricity tariff hike.
The rakyat has to put up with all sort of hikes one
after the other and this definitely burden the low and
the middle income earner, he said when met after a
recent meeting to oppose the hike.
Among those present at the meeting were PAS treasurer
Dr Mohd Hatta Ramli, DAP publicity secretary Theresa
Kok, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) information chief
Tian Chua, Parti Sosialis Malaysia pro-tem secretary
general S. Arutchelvan and representatives of
non-governmental organizations (NGO).
Strong signal needed from the rakyat
Syed Shahir who is also the Malaysian Trade Union
Congress (MTUC) president said the toll hike would be
felt by anyone especially those who resides in the
Klang Valley.
You just cant go anywhere without paying toll, he
said.
He also said that a lot of workers has been
complaining that they were not getting any salary
increment but yet they have to keep up with rising
cost of living.
We just have to be sensitive. We can no longer take
the approach of being insensitive, he said.
We must send a strong signal that we are serious
against the toll hike, he said adding that otherwise
government leaders would be complacent and developed a
habit of telling themselves that the rakyat would only
make a noise just for two or three weeks.
He also questioned why the agreement between the
concessionaries and the government which provided for
the hikes had been kept in a shroud of secrecy.
He also lambasted arguments by the government which
said that the hike was still lower to several
countries as not being compared fairly.
You have to look at a lot of things to make a
comparison. What about our road quality? How many
tunnels or bridges that we have?, he said
He also noted that in certain countries tolls were
meant to keep traffic out of town centres.
We are being tolled even if we were going out of
town, he said.
