What is guidance and misguidance?

 

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon His Messenger Muhammad, his folk, companions, and followers

 

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

 

Imam Nasafi explains in his `Aqa’id,

 

“And Allah leads astray whomever He wishes and guides whomever He wishes.”

 

Shaykh Abd al-Malik al-Sa`di, a leading Iraqi scholar, explains in his commentary that:

 

1. Allah’s “leading astray” means that He creates misguidance (dalal);

 

2. Allah’s “guiding” means that He creates a state of guidance (ihtida’).

 

Guidance (hidaya) has two main meanings:

 

1. Showing the way to the truth, as in Allah’s words, “Indeed, you guide to a straight path,” [Qur’an, Surat al-Shura: 52] addressing the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); and

 

2. Creating a state of guidance in someone, and making someone actually arrive at the truth. This is what is meant by Allah’s words, “You do not guide those whom you like,” [Qur’an, Surat al-Qasas, 56] again addressing the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

 

Thus, Allah is the one who creates misguidance in people, after they choose its means and direct themselves to it. Likewise, Allah Most High creates guidance in people, after they choose its means and direct themselves to it. [Abd al-Malik al-Sa`di, Sharh al-`Aqa’id al-Nasafiyya, 121]

 

This is true belief, for “Allah is the creator of all things,” as Revelation affirms and reason confirms, and yet the human has a contingent will and power through which they acquire moral responsibility.

 

And Allah alone gives success.

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By Allah, if Allah guides one person by you, it is better for you than the best types of camels." [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)  also said, "Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all."
