Sister K a r i m a aslam alikum,
You have made it so clear that no one can be misguided. Nowadays you never know who you trust, but truth has its roots and lies too. May Allah show us the right path and guide all Muslims through it. Aslam alikum Abdulqader

Assalaamu `Alaykum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuhu
Dear Sister Nargis,
I pray you and your family are well by the leave of Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta'aala.
I have been following your correspondence from June 04 to July 26, 2005 requesting financial donations for your brother, Akhtar Hasan's kidney transplant. I have received request for advice from several brothers and sisters who wished to help your brother but are afraid that it might be a scam. I have also read the email exchanges you had with our brothers and sisters who came forward and offered different ways to help you - e.g. sister Naseerah and brothers Yalman, Sufi Ali, and Noor Gillani. Brother Noor offered you one of the best suggestions and even offered to personally help you put the mechanism together via PYAR to realise the funds needed for your brother's transplant. I am aware from all your correspondence that you want all donated funds to go directly into your brothers personal bank account. If Akhtar's transplant is so urgent, why didn't you let Brother Noor guide you, for your brother's sake?
I am writing to you because I read this statement you transmitted today: "... yet I see even after knowing our dire need, no one has come forward...." (your full text is attached at the end of this page)
Sister Nargis, you know very well that this public statement of yours is not truthful! In most of your correspondence you emphasised over and over again that you are a "momineen." A believer does not tell a lie nor does (s)he bear false testimony against Muslims. All the people I mentioned above came forward immediately to help/advice you so how can you write such a statement ? (their emails are attached below)
One of our brothers in Islam, Nagib, expressed that he would like to help your brother: "I would also like to help but how do you ensure that request of this kind received through anonymous hotmail or yahoo accounts are legitimate and not scam?" And Sister Naseerah wrote: "Sister Karima, ..... please could you advise me on what you think is the best course of action for me to take on this matter? I'd like to help but don't really know how." These are valid and important questions - I am sure many of our brothers and sisters caught in such a dilemma, ponder the same - afraid to be tricked by scamsters. All of us are eager to help our fellow Muslims, fee sabeelillaah and lihubbillaah, especially those who are critically ill, because we are mindful of what Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta'aala tells us (interpretation of the meaning):
"The believers are nothing else than brothers (in Islamic religion)…” (al-Hujuraat 49:10) And He Ta'aala describes them (interpretation of the meaning):“… severe against disbelievers, and merciful among themselves…” (al-Fath 48:29) Also what our Prophet, Sall Allaahu `alayhi wa sallam said: "The relationship of the believer towards the people of faith is like that of the head to the body. The believer feels the pain of the people of faith just as the body feels the pain of the head." (Narrated by Imaam Ahmad). But all of us are also mindful that whatever we give belongs to Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta'aala. Therefore, we have to make sure that it is spent correctly for His Ta'aala's Pleasure - on a good (genuine) and just cause otherwise we will be held accountable for irresponsible, unverified and careless use of His Ta'aala's amaanat.
So how can we ensure that the monetary request we received from you is genuine and not a scam? To assure us that your brother's plight is real, I have listed some suggestions for your consideration:
Sister Nargis, before any funds can be remitted to support your brother's kidney transplant, we must do due diligence by asking for verifiable proof to the fact from you. Could you please prepare and send the following within ten (10) days. I am sure you will have no problem providing them:
1. Your brother, Akhtar, to authorise his renal specialist to issue a detailed medical summary report covering points #3, 4, 5, 6, 7 vis-à-vis his kidney transplant (signed by the specialist at a public notary and duly witnessed by a Lahore solicitor which I will instruct my U.K. solicitors, Farrer & Co., located at 66, Lincoln Inns Fields, London WC2A 3LH, to appoint, on my account (as part of my sadaqah). Your brother should have no problem in obtaining this from his renal specialist. You mentioned in one of your emails that you would send your brother's renal scan report to anyone who wishes to view it - it's pointless as not many people know how to read a scan report.
2. The name of the specialist and the hospital phone and his extension number for the Lahore solicitor to contact him. No mobile or home phone numbers. .
3. In the same letter, the specialist confirms that your brother has had his "histocompatibility laboratory tests" - i.e.:
4. In the same letter, the specialist confirms that your brother is fit for a kidney transplant, and that an appropriate donor kidney has been found for transplant on such-and-such a date
5. In the same letter, the specialist confirms that a "patient-client account" has been established for Akhtar in the hospital to receive (donated) funds to pay for his transplant. The specialist also confirms that only after all charges has been deducted by the hospital for his transplant, medicine etc, the remaining funds will then be released immediately to your brother or his nominee for his post-opt care and recovery expenses.
6. A letter from the Accounts office/department confirming point #5. This should be attached, notarised and witnessed together with the specialist's letter
7. Once we are satisfied that your brother's transplant case is genuine, then you must quickly send us the hospital's bank details:
* Bank's Name * Bank's Address * Account Number * S.W.I.F.T or ABA Routing code(s) * Your brother's hospital I.D. reference.
8. Once the Lahore solicitor confirms to my U.K. solicitor that all the above are in good order, I shall send out a message to our brothers and sisters who, in shaa'Allaah will come to your brother's aid speedily, in shaa'Allaah.
There can be no reason why you or your brother will not be able to provide us this notarised document. However, if there is no action on your part within the proposed ten (10) days, then please cease and desist from sending any more of your emails to our Muslim community. May Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta'aala accept my niyyah for writing this communiqué to you. I pray to Allaah Almighty to make these few words of use to my brothers and sisters in Islam and may He reform us all and make us proceed always on the right path and fortify us with the knowledge of of His Deen and steadfastness in adhering to it. May Allaah protect us from the evils of ourselves and from our bad actions. Verily He is the Protector and Sustainer. Aameen. Wa `Assalaamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuhu

It is our duty to be responsible what we forward to our Muslims community. Always ask questions. If you don't get any answers or answers that does make sense, do not forward their request under any circumstances. It will save our brothers and sisters alot of confusion, grief and guilt not knowing what is best to do.

Assalaam Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah Wa Barakatuh
Sister Karima, Insha'Allah you received my reply to your email. I still haven't received a response from Nargis, despite how "desperate" she said she was. My assistance is clearly not required and won't be given in this case. I think a caution would be appropriate, especially if she's still asking for money elsewhere. Sister, please tell me the best wording for such a caution that I can send to UK Muslimah or send the group a copy of your own caution, Insha'Allah.
JazakAllah Khair, Fi Aman Allah Your Sister, Naseerah
