Subject: Hunting "extremism"; "Extremist" to whom?
Date: Fri, 26 Aug 2005 14:10:31 -0400

Dear Sir:

This is a copy of a letter sent to Premier McGuinty.

We feel the use of the term “extremism” is insidious; its interpretation must be explained and justified in the light of international law.

We would appreciate a response to this letter, this term has been popularized by Tony Blair and George W Bush in their national arenas.

Dear Sir:

Today's Toronto Star (August 26, 2005) has an article "Hate crimes team gets a boost" in which it covers Monte Kwinter's (Ontario provincial) Joint Forces Hate Crime and Extremism Investigative Team".

We are very concerned about the use of the term "extremism"; like the term "terrorism" (for example: Israeli terrorism -- referred to as "crimes against humanity" by the UN -- is given names other than "terrorism" here), "extremism" is a matter of perspective. Actions against "extremism" imply limits on freedom of _xpression of particular viewpoints.

In Britain, "extremism" translates to anti-Israeli attitudes. Since Kwinter was one of those behind sending three dozen Ontario policeofficers to train in Israel, I think there is good reason to be concerned about how he interprets this term. Will Middle East peace groups be considered "extremist" that are focused on Palestinian rights? What about churches that are developing boycott and divestment campaigns against the brutal Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories?

Before any money is devoted to the hunting of "extremists" and "extremism", we must have a definition of exactly what they are talking about and the grounds for their interpretation.
