Source of Forged Niger-Iraq Uranium Documents Identified [?]
ROME, Nov. 3 - Italy's spymaster identified an Italian occasional spy named Rocco Martino on Thursday as the disseminator of forged documents that described efforts by Iraq to buy uranium ore from Niger for a nuclear weapons program, three lawmakers said Thursday.
The spymaster, Gen. Nicolò Pollari, director of the Italian military intelligence agency known as Sismi, disclosed that Mr. Martino was the source of the forged documents in closed-door testimony to a parliamentary committee that oversees secret services, the lawmakers said.

Wait a second... (none / 1) The "disseminator" is different from the "forger." It was already pretty well known that Martino was in the chain of custody, but that still doesn't solve the mystery.

It's been alleged/reported for a long time now that Martino passed on the forgeries. Where did he get them from? Chalabi? Ledeen? Pollari himself? That's the question.

Old news - here's our patsy (none / 0) FBI Mueller sent a letter last summer exonerating the Italians and saying that the investigation was closed. It was one guy, doing it for personal profit -Rocco Martino. Martino says, I'm involved, but I'm a middleman, I'm a patsy. Yep Rocco Martino, forged them documents -all by himself on the sixth floor of a Texas Book depository. Ask Arlen Specter if he believes in the lone forger theory and a "magic ballpoint".

but what's the motive? (none / 0) Right. This story isn't finished until we know the motive for peddling the forgeries. The one which has so far been trotted out, and denied, is Berloscuin's desire to "get in good" with the Bush administration. Eh. I don't buy it, and it plays like a bad ethnic joke. Only two others come to mind. One would be that someone out there actually wanted to make the administration look BAD - if so, mission accomplished, but that seems a little Byzantine. The other and most likely is money of course. Who paid Martino and Co. and why? The juiciest answer is the Administration, of course, someone like Hadley or some rogue Administration operative, and that that's what the mysterious meeting in Rome was all about. But am I crazy to think that's too stupid and corrupt even for these guys? I guess Josh Marhsall is the one to ask...
