Work for this world as if you are going to live forever, Prepare for the Hereafter as if you are going to die tomorrow.
[Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)]
The Question, the Choice & the Realization
  • Ask your self where you are in life and where are you heading to.
“If you want to know your future, look at what you are doing at this moment.” [ancient Tibetan saying]
  • “There are two primary choices in life: to accept conditions as they exist, or accept the responsibility for changing them.” [motivational author, Denis Waitley]
  • "It is only when we know and understand that we have a limited time on earth; and that we have no way of knowing when our time is up that we begin to live each day to the fullest, as if it was the only one we had." [philanthropist and author, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross]
If you don't act on life, life has a habit of overtaking you.
“Most people dread finding out when they come to die that they have never really lived.” [writer, Henry David Thoreau]. Note how the hours slip into days, the days slip into weeks, the weeks slip into months and the months slip into years. Then we wake up one day, in the twilight of our lives, and wonder what could have been. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) so aptly reminded us:
ÇáäÇÓ äíÇã ÝÇÐÇ ãÇÊæÇ ÇäÊÈåæÇ
"People are asleep. Upon death, they wake up."
The Need to Develop the Self
We need to move from the bondage of yesterday to the possibilities of tomorrow. Remember the ancient wisdom: "Yesterday is but a Dream, And To-morrow is only a Vision; But To-day well lived makes Every Yesterday a Dream of Happiness, And every Tomorrow a Vision of Hope." [Kalidasa - 2nd century BC poet]
To step into the promising world of tomorrow we need to prepare ourselves to engage that reality today. It must be noted that too often, our plans revolve around changing things and changing others rather than improving ourselves. “People are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to improve themselves; they therefore remain bound.” [Author, James Allen] We can only have a better world if we have improved individuals and we can only have better individuals if each of us is committed to improve ourselves.
If we take care of our infrastructure (faith, physical well-being, mind, heart, and spirit) we improve our lives and enhance our potential to have a positive impact on the world around us. Remember the Qur'anic advice:
Åöäøó Çááøåó áÇó íõÛóíøöÑõ ãóÇ ÈöÞóæúãò ÍóÊøóì íõÛóíøöÑõæÇú ãóÇ ÈöÃóäúÝõÓöåöãú
Certainly, Allah will not change the condition of people, unless and until they change themselves.
[Quran 13: 11]
Remember ...
  • You cannot expect to achieve new goals or move beyond your present circumstances unless you change. [Motivational speaker, Les Brown]
  • We cannot become what we need to be by remaining what we are. [leadership trainer, Max Depree]
Moving On
We need to approach the world and engage the future with an open mind; and an open mind is not the same as an empty head. In Islam, the very first concept revealed in the Qur'an was "iqra' "; and iqra' is not an injunction to fill the mind with mere information but rather ...
to open the mind through facts and pursuance of truth;
  • by removing prejudice with understanding (Perception)
  • by removing darkness through light (Knowledge)
  • by removing evil with good (Character)
  • by replacing hatred with love (Compassion)
This is by no means an easy task; for none shall readily incline to this
æóãóÇ íõáóÞøóÇåóÇ ÅöáøóÇ ÇáøóÐöíäó ÕóÈóÑõæÇ æóãóÇ íõáóÞøóÇåóÇ ÅöáøóÇ Ðõæ ÍóÙøò ÚóÙöíãò
except those with the capacity for tremendous patient perseverance, and none shall be inclined to this except those with tremendous resolve. [Qur'an 41:35]
We need to move ...
  • from making excuses to providing ideas
  • from focusing on faults to finding solutions
  • from blaming others to analyzing ourselves
  • from focusing less on the inactivity of others to attending to one's own possible contribution
  • from the limitations of others to the potential of the self
  • from making mere promises to fulfilling commitments
  • from letting things happen to making things happen
  • from the shackles of the past to the possibilities of the future.
Start Now
"Time is free, but it's priceless. You can't own it, but you can use it. You can't keep it, but you can spend it. Once you've lost it, you can never get it back." [author, Harvey Mackay] So, half the difficulty of a task is overcome by initiating action. The ancient ones advised, “well begun is half done”. We are commanded in the Qur’an to æÇáÊäÙÑ äÝÓ ãÇ ÞÏãÊ áÛÏ carefully consider what we are sending forth/doing for our future. So, make the commitment to gain total control of your life today, and you will thank yourself tomorrow.

{Invite (mankind, O Muhammad ) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Qur'an) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided.} (Holy Quran-16:125)

{And who is better in speech than he who [says: "My Lord is Allah (believes in His Oneness)," and then stands straight (acts upon His Order), and] invites (men) to Allah's (Islamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds, and says: "I am one of the Muslims."} (Holy Quran-41:33)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By Allah, if Allah guides one person by you, it is better for you than the best types of camels." [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)  also said, "Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all." [Muslim, Ahmad, Aboo Daawood, an-Nasaa'ee, at-Tirmidhee, Ibn Maajah]
