Chavez orders army to take over rice companies

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has ordered the army to seize control of
rice-processing companies due to a spat with the industry over prices.
Mr Chavez has accused the companies of overcharging and refusing to produce
rice at prices set by the Government.
He says he will not hesitate to expropriate them permanently if they continue
to ignore the price controls.
In a televised address, the Venezuelan leader said the Government was making
the move to protect ordinary Venezuelans, not wealthy companies.
"This Government is here to protect the people, not to protect the bourgeoisie
or the rich," he said.
"Commander in General of the national guard, immediately contact the
agricultural minister, the head of the operational strategic command and the
commanders of the barracks to support the national guard in the takeover of all
these companies that process rice in Venezuela."
The situation with basic food stuffs in Venezuela is becoming ever more
complicated.
The Government provides basic food for the poor in state-run markets called
Mercal.
But many producers of rice, wheat and meat complain that the price regulations
leave them without a profit and that many are facing bankruptcy.
