Amid rising sentiment that America's cyber security threat fully rivals
the terrorism threat, it is becoming time for U.S. citizens -- especially
younger citizens -- to educate themselves about cyber security and assume
part of the responsibility to thwart attacks.
For younger people, there are a growing number of cyber educational
opportunities, starting even before the college level, which can make them
particularly effective at thwarting cyber attacks and may spark their
desire to pursue cyber security careers.
Corporate cyber security internships now start as young as age 16 at
Northrop Grumman Corp., one of the largest cyber security providers to the
federal government. The Air Force Association, an independent aerospace
education association, has created CyberPatriot, a national high school
cyber defense competition.
And the Maryland Cybersecurity Center (MC2) at the University of Maryland
has begun targeting interested students as early as middle and high school
who are interested in STEM and computer subjects. Through summer programs
and weekend workshops, students at different interest and knowledge levels
start learning about cyber security in a variety of ways.
