Hasan Palaz, the former vice president of the Scientific and Technological
Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), said in comments on a Bugün TV
network program that TÜBİTAK has neither the jurisdiction nor the
necessary equipment to hack into phones protected with encryption
technology.
Palaz, who was removed from his post over claims he was involved in the
bugging of former Prime Minister and now President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's
office and study room, said: “The other side [Erdoğan and his associates]
have a knack for playing the victim. Also, they claim I listened to their
encrypted phones. TÜBİTAK has neither the means nor the authority to
engage in such activities.”
The former vice president of TÜBİTAK -- Turkey's top governmental science
and technology institute -- also commented on audio recordings leaked over
the internet ahead of March 30 local elections last year that were at the
center of a graft and bribery scandal that broke at the end of 2013. The
graft investigations made public on Dec. 17 and 25 of that year revealed
the biggest corruption and bribery scandal in the history of the republic,
in which some members of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party)
government as well as family members of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan
were allegedly implicated.
