As coalition forces moved along the Iraqi section of the Tigris River in
mid-2016, 11,000 kilometres away in Canberra cyber warriors were at their
keyboards waiting to strike.
In what Australia's digital spy chief claims to be a world first, cyber
operatives hacked into ISIS communications, rendered them useless and
ultimately allowed coalition troops to retake the territory.
"It was the first time that an offensive cyber operation had been conducted so
closely synchronised with the movements of military personnel in theatre," Mike
Burgess, the Director-General of the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) will
claim on Wednesday.
"Terrorist commanders couldn’t connect to the internet and were unable to
communicate with each other."
