Coffey Health System, a 25-bed critical access hospital in Kansas, has agreed
to pay a $250,000 settlement for alleged False Claims Act violations related to
its meaningful use attestation.
WHY IT MATTERS
Specifically, the U.S. Department of Justice charged that the hospital falsely
attested that it had conducted the necessary security assessment to comply with
the federal Electronic Health Records Incentive Program.
Back in 2012 and 2013 the hospital falsely claimed it had undergone the
security analysis required to qualify for the meaningful use program, which was
established in 2009 by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The health system was found to have submitted false claims to the Medicare and
Medicaid Programs to obtain the payments granted by the incentive program.
