An Iowa state senator is calling on the legislative oversight committee to
investigate at least two known county courthouse break-ins authorized by the
Iowa judicial branch.
Sen. Tony Bisignano (D-Des Moines), a ranking member of the committee, told the
Register on Thursday that he would like the committee to convene as a third
party to raise questions about the judicial branch's intentions and to
investigate the men arrested and the cybersecurity company that hired them.
Two Coalfire employees were arrested last week and charged with third-degree
burglary and possession of burglary tools after they tripped an alarm shortly
after midnight in the Dallas County Courthouse on Sept. 11.
Judicial branch officials on Wednesday confirmed that Coalfire was under
contract with them to attempt "unauthorized access" to court records "through
various means" to check for potential security vulnerabilities of Iowa's
electronic court records. It was a turnaround from the week before, when agency
officials denied they approved "forced entry" to the building.
