It seems the problem stems from the fact that I use the "ISNULL" predicate 
which users can use directly too. How about introducing a internal "ISOUTER" 
predicate for that purpose instead? I guess that would allow for using the 
existing equivalence set tests. I'll read a bit into the paper to understand 
how the algorithm could be extended to support outer joins, but could you in 
the meantime comment on the idea of a separate predicate?
