Andrei Mikhailovsky created CLOUDSTACK-8256:
-----------------------------------------------

Summary: Add support to keep snapshots on Primary Storage if
supported by backend
                 Key: CLOUDSTACK-8256
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CLOUDSTACK-8256
             Project: CloudStack
          Issue Type: Improvement
Security Level: Public (Anyone can view this level - this is the default.)
          Components: KVM, Storage Controller
    Affects Versions: 4.4.1, 4.3.1
         Environment: kvm, ceph, rbd
            Reporter: Andrei Mikhailovsky
             Fix For: 4.6.0

It would be very useful to have the ability to keep volume snapshots on the
primary storage where the primary storage supports snapshotting. For instance,
KVM + Ceph/RBD.

Instead of copying a snapshot to a secondary storage and retrieving it when
needed, the snapshot should be used from the primary storage. This will greatly
speed up the process of using snapshots and will allow large scale
functionality of this feature on KVM hypervisors.

At the moment, snapshotting with KVM is not practical even on small
deployments. It takes too much time and clogs the network.
