I strongly believe that it *is* a bug. If any of these characters is not
escaped in an attribute then the parser that reads such an XML file will
[normalize them to
spaces|https://www.w3.org/TR/1998/REC-xml-19980210#AVNormalize] (instead of tab
or line break).
