Gilles Sadowski commented on COMMONSSITE-179:
---------------------------------------------
bq. It is not required to use "Apache" in a wordmark or logo.
Thanks for confirming.
bq. guidance we have received from Trademarks indicated we should avoid using
"ASF" for projects
That is new information for me; thank for the clarification.
bq. I know you don't think this is important, [...]
You must be confusing with someone else.
I can understand the goal (of why ASF uses trademarks) or the means (being
"over-cautious"); but I'm still missing the rationale for thinking that a
project's logo displaying "ASF" (as the "ASF" does itself) will undermine the
enforcement of that project's trademark.
For my own education, I'd be interested to read the actual arguments that led
to the conclusion. Can you provide a pointer?
Now to _something else_, that is the object of this report.
"Apache Commons" (all by itself) should not be our logo, because it is _not_ a
logo (it's a "wordmark", isn't it?); the only logo appearing on the current
proposals (Melissa's and Gary's) is just the ASF logo.
Moreover, the project's name ("Apache Commons") is prominently displayed
everywhere on the website; having it in a "graphical form" is plain redundant.
My personal opinion is that we could come up with something a tiny bit more
thoughtful than that.
Even if there is strong (and shared?) opinion that we should not spend one more
minute on it, and that a wordmark is fine, I'd propose that it be *"The Commons
Components"* (perhaps with some variations in the fonts used? E.g. "The" and
"Components" in italic?).
Rationale (not the only one) is to make it clearer that "Commons" is not a
single (Java) library. Recently, the wrong impression is conveyed from wording
often used on the ML for example.
*-1 on having "Apache" in the logo.* It has not been there for years (at least
in the ["official" logo|https://www.apache.org/logos/res/commons/commons.pdf]);
and reverting to using it, now that the ASF has officially gone away from it,
makes zero sense.
