This is correct however you do still need this plugin if you are also supporting other platforms. Version 5.0.1 introduced a change to stop the installation of this plugin for cordova-ios@6. But there was a bug that caused the plugin to still clobber the js variable, which was only resolved in v6.0.0 of the splash screen plugin. The OP in his reproduction app has the splashscreen pinned to ^5.0.2.
