Work on the W3C Contacts API (from which the current cordova plugin was
inspired) has continued and the spec and the cordova API are thus no longer
aligned. The latest W3C spec is at
http://www.w3.org/2012/sysapps/contacts-manager-api/
Although that spec is likely to continue evolving, it would be good to look at
the differences between the cordovo API and the W3C spec to see if they can
start getting aligned, or to give feedback to the W3C group where it couldn't
be aligned.
