You are right. On windows : can not be used as a sign that it is a maven
artifact. Of course it would be possible to use something like
artifact:groupId:artifactId:version:type. So I will switch to wsdlArtifact.
I do not think a dependency is strictly necessary. I use the maven
Artifactresolver to load the wsdl into the local repository so the updates are
handled like they would be in a normal dependency.
