I suffered from Issue 102378 (PDF export crash), tried to establish it was
solved by downloading
the German version
  OOo_3.1.1rc1_20090807_MacOSXPowerPC_install_de.dmg
from the link given:
http://ooopackages.good-day.net/pub/OpenOffice.org/MacOSX/3.1.1rc1_20090807/

I started OO successfully, try to load a calc file, that had given me the PDF
crash before. I had a crash.
The crash on loading a file seems to be reproducible. It happens whether I open
a file from OpenOffice or whether I start in Finder.
It even happens on templates I loaded from the OpenOffice Website such as
01_Note, Volker Ahrendt, Sun Microsystems, 13.06.2008, 13:00:00.

The work around is: first opening an empty file, only then loading an existing
file with open.
Thus I start open office by double clicking in my Mac's dock. I get the start
screen, select "a new writer document". After the empty writer file appears I
can open my files, either from finder or from the files -> open menu.

The messages in the Max OS X console are as follows (date 2009-08-28 removed):
