I can't say that I can add anything about this as an .odt file under OOo

But I did have /exactly/ this happen recently to two documents saved as .doc
from MSword2007, well one saved and one left open when windows crashed.

In each case I had a file of the right number of pages and lines but with every
character - printable and white space - replaced by '#' characters.

And a similar case over a year ago (with less pages than I was expecting) with
word 2003 under XP.

Is it possibly something in the microsoft file handling libraries?
