The download from this server was also much faster. Closer to my home, I guess. Before that I encountered difficulty with installing from other MSI packages, and after a quick search I used the downloaded program of WindowsXP-KB942288-v3- x86.exe - apparently KB942288, which is in fact MSI installer version 4.5 . After that, I did a reboot of my system. Now both download and install proceeded as intended. No problems anymore.
