xml1.appendChild(child);
child = <pop><child name="George"/></pop>;
xml1.appendChild(child);

compiles into:
  var /** @type {XML} */ child = new XML( '<pop><child name="Sam"/></pop>') ;
  xml1.appendChild(child);
  child = '<pop><child name="George"/></pop>';
  xml1.appendChild(child);
