Bingo.

This works:
                        var xmlList:XMLList = list;
                        for each(item in xmlList)
                                appendChild(item);

Neither type of casting works though. Is that hard to fix?

FWIW, I think I'm just going to stick with a regular while loop for concat(), 
but this is important for client code.
