I don't think locking the version to 2.4 is a sustainable solution. Eventually,
2.4 might stop working entirely. Moreover, there were security reasons (which
we don't understand properly) to drop support for specifying a repository on
the command line. Lastly, the problem only exists for SNAPSHOT versions. I
would be ok with changing the commands so that we first generate a (temporary)
settings.xml file, which is passed to {{mvn --settings}}.
