Thanks for your reply. I can check this, but I believe my example for {{A}} 
above would look broadly like this in Java:

class ReplWrapper implements Serializable {
  final int x = 1;
  class A implements Product, Serializable {
    final int y; // encapsulated in getter
    A(int y) { this.y = y; } // encapsulated using apply method
    int z() { return x; }
    // other case class autogenerated stuff, like copy, equals, toString, etc.
  }

Flink would serialise the above with no problems if {{A}} didn't implement 
(scala) {{Product}}. I assumed it was using {{KryoSerializer}} rather than 
recognising it as a POJO but I haven't checked. A similar approach would be 
fine for case classes too, but at the moment they are intercepted due to being 
{{Products}}, and treated by the {{ScalaCaseClassSerializer}}, which makes no 
attempt to serialise parent classes. It just throws an error if presented with 
anything nested.

If Flink is looking to avoid JVM serialisation, then perhaps the best route 
would be to enhance {{ScalaCaseClassSerializer}} to be capable of serialising 
parent classes (that implement {{Serializable}})?
