Hey Gyula! I fully agree that this is currently in a semi-weird state where
you can only activate externalized checkpoints in the program, but have to
specify the directory in the config. When I opened the initial PR for
externalized checkpoints, we discussed this and moved away from it in order to
take the configuration from the used backend. There was PR for this here:
https://github.com/apache/flink/pull/2752. I would prefer that approach in that
PR over this, but we didn't have time to finalize it for the release last year
and moved it to 1.3.
