Would suggest leaving ByteRange as is.  Can you subclass it Nick and make 
TrackingByteRange?  It is ugly that we have to reget the offset for want of 
this TrackingByteRanger class you are trying to add here.  

Do you mean volatile here:

-  private int hash = UNSET_HASH_VALUE;
+  private transient int hash = UNSET_HASH_VALUE;
