I realize that this is longer term (and perhaps you're already doing/did and I 
just missed it?) but what about doing 1, but get the fix you're trying to hack 
into hbase codebase into upstream, protobuf itself, instead. Isn't this a 
change that would benefit the entire protobuf community?
