Nick Dimiduk commented on HBASE-10642:
--------------------------------------
bq. I have no plans/time to add anything for mapred.
Very well. I guess we'll see if anyone complains about its absence (I'm
thinking of Hive).
bq. Stack and I chatted again yesterday, and that led to this issue. There will
probably just be one more release of 0.96 anyway (which may or may not have
this).
Agreed that everyone should be moving to 0.98. A useful feature like this
should be back-ported across all maintained releases if it's back-ported to
any. If it's going into 0.94, let's see it for 0.96 as well. But if the release
managers/PMC are in sync about it, I have no authority to object.

> I think we want drive towards all (or most) M/R over HBase to be against
> snapshots and HDFS directly.
> Adopting a simple input format (even if just as a sample) as part of HBase
> will allow us to direct users this way.
