I didn't write the original patch. I was just the donkey doing the grunt work
to carry this valuable redo of our internals home. You'd have to ask the
original author.
Yeah, sorry, it was a particularly insidious change -- keeping the boolean type
but changing its semantic -- but original author was free to make this change
going by the class markings (This is not public API). Would have been better if
it were a clean breaking change.
