All of our logs are single lines of multiple attributes. If it works there, why
not here?

In this case, it is neither of the above.
I'd think 'history' in a datastore would be all that ever happened but in this
case you can delete 'history' by removing backups -- full and incremental -- so
subsequent listings are no longer histories...
