I think the answer is yes. You're right that VERSION is orthogonal to 
COMPRESSION. I do agree with Stack that while we're adding metadata to HLog we 
should add a VERSION as well. We should add both VERSION and COMPRESSION 
metadata. (Maybe that's what you were saying anyway, if so feel free to ignore
