Anoop Sam John commented on HBASE-22760:

That will be a good idea too [~reidchan].
Compare both options.. Normally which path we took for these kind of halt
ops? For balance turn off we have shell command. For compactions also I
believe we have shell command. That is why consistency wise shell command looks
better.
One more thing to consider here is the possible HM restart or HA failover to
standby HM. Do we handle balancer turn off in such cases? Need to check . The
config change and ConfigurationObserver way can help in this regard if the HM
is restarted. If it is HA failover, then the config must have been updated in
both xmls. Am not sure whether we handle ConfigurationObserver in standby HM.
Any ways good to check these.

> For any scheduled snapshot backup activity, we would like to disable
> auto-cleaner for snapshot based on TTL. However, as per HBASE-22648 we have a
> config to disable snapshot auto-cleaner:
> hbase.master.cleaner.snapshot.disable, which would take effect only upon
> HMaster restart just similar to any other hbase-site configs.
> For any running cluster, we should be able to stop/resume auto-cleanup
> activity for snapshot based on shell command. Something similar to below
> command should be able to stop/start cleanup chore:
> hbase(main):001:0> auto_snapshot_cleaner false (disable auto-cleaner)
> hbase(main):001:0> auto_snapshot_cleaner true (enable auto-cleaner)
