[~lhofhansl] -1 on this one. Small patch but causes big headache that is still
being worked though (I think I know what [~ted_yu] is up to over in HBASE-8010
but it is by no means a comprehensive solution and is looking like it will
cause a ripple all over the code base given the way it is being addressed).
