That would enable your case with the timeout approach. Feel free to try to take up, or I will eventually get around to it when I get a chance. Regarding the ability to receive notifications to invalidate the cache, there is also HIVE-19154, where HS2 is able to listen on metastore notification events to invalidate result cache entries.
