Sergey Shelukhin commented on HIVE-16233:
-----------------------------------------

Ran some perf tests with fragmentation induced. On most queries there are no
difference (queries are not designed to be cache-bound so I wouldn't expect
perf improvement).
q43 seems a little slower after inducing fragmentation than when min size is
set to 256k. Will look more tomorrow; there were some spurious slowdowns during
the run, where the 256Kb version was also slower for single instances of some
query compared to all other runs of the same query with and without the patch,
so q43 could also be spurious

> Also reported by [~selinazh] while using older bits.
> This JIRA will be used to track a long-term fix.
> We were initially planning to write a different allocator with compaction,
> but now we are stuck with buddyallocator.
> There are two approaches - compaction on top of buddy allocator (should be
> fairly simple actually, aside from indirection... luckily for the latter, we
> can take the buffer out in most places and we can reuse the existing
> locking-to-prevent-eviction mechanism to also prevent reallocation); or
> writing a better allocator. Probably the former is preferred, need to think
> about the latter.
