   >If the API can't hide the fact that there are two very different things 
happening under the hood I don't think they should be combined.
   
   I definitely agree with this statement but I do think it should be quite 
possible to hide the fact that there are 2 different things happening under the 
hood.
   
   I think I'm generally OK (+0.5) to move ahead as it is laid out here and I 
also want to avoid breaking changes, @RussellSpitzer @ajantha-bhat so if we 
want to move forward with this PR feel free!
