--------------------------------------------------------------------

[~ab], [~ilan] - Ishan said in Slack that he thought docs were all that are
required for deprecating this since it's removed in 9.0. What do you both think
about a simple message like this on the top of all autoscaling pages in the ref
guide ({{solr-autoscaling*.adoc}}) that reads simply:

{quote}
The autoscaling framework in its current form is deprecated and will be removed
in Solr 9.0.

A new design for this feature is currently under development in SOLR-14656 with
a goal for release with Solr 9.0.
{quote}

When 8.7 goes out we could add something like this to the Release Notes (or
send it separately to the user list at any time):

{quote}
As of 8.7, the autoscaling framework in Solr today has been deprecated and will
be removed in Solr 9.0.

As the framework was adopted among our user base, we discovered fundamental
flaws in its design that made continuing to support it unsustainable for our
developer community. Issues with scaling collection placement calculations and
a complex rule syntax were becoming more and more difficult to solve.

A new design and implementation of this feature is underway, with a goal of
making it available in Solr 9.0. This design will make it possible to have
autoscaling implementations available as plugins to suit various use cases and
needs (see also SOLR-14656 for details). The first plugin will be similar to
the autoscaling framework as it exists today, and other plugins are planned for
the future for larger clusters and those who would like different
implementations.
{quote}

The 3rd paragraph there could be revised to be more or less specific, but
that's the gist of it. We could also say something about regretting the
inconvenience, etc., that's up to you guys.

Let me know if you like the Ref Guide changes, and I'll make those in branch_8x.

> The autoscaling framework is being re-designed in SOLR-14613 (SIP:
> https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/SOLR/SIP-8+Autoscaling+policy+engine+V2).
> The current autoscaling framework is very inefficient, improperly designed
> and too bloated and doesn't receive the level of support we aspire to provide
> for all components that we ship.
> This issue is to deprecate current autoscaling framework in 8x, so we can
> focus on the new autoscaling framework afresh.
