Ilan Ginzburg commented on SOLR-14788:
--------------------------------------

Mark, just to be clear here, I don't +at all+ see the work I'm trying to do
(removing Overseer) as competing +in any way+ with the work you do with the ref
impl.

Quite the opposite actually! Removing Overseer is more complex than I first
thought because of cluster state caching and access so it's going to take more
time. I hope your changes make it to/as master before I'm done, then I'll be
happy to port/redo my changes on top of that branch rather than master that I'm
currently using.

I see the two initiatives trying to move things in the same direction: simplify
the code and make it more efficient. I am not certain mine is going to succeed
(will I manage to reimplement everything distributed? Will it be faster?) but I
think there's a reasonable chance it will, so I need to try to find out... :)

And if I fail at it, by trying I would have learned better how the whole thing
works, so it wouldn't be completely wasted time anyway.

> I have stolen this title from Ishan or Noble and Ishan.
> This issue is meant to capture the work of a small team that is forming to
> push Solr and SolrCloud to the next phase.
> I have kicked off the work with an effort to create a very fast and solid
> base. That work is not 100% done, but it's ready to join the fight.
> Tim Potter has started giving me a tremendous hand in finishing up. Ishan and
> Noble have already contributed support and testing and have plans for
> additional work to shore up some of our current shortcomings.
> Others have expressed an interest in helping and hopefully they will pop up
> here as well.
> Let's organize and discuss our efforts here and in various sub issues.
