are right: the specs does not says it should be an HTML at all...
So, what to do? Pass as-is?

Fully agree and I highly doubt that anyone will put any serious effort into it.
Configuration will be a serious problem as it is module-agnostic. You might be
better off by using another module. I do personally think that if a module does
not really do what others do on a high-quality level, there is no reason to
keep it around just to brag with a huge amount of "supported" modules.
