Confirming the report on current master: Maven never writes this field.
`ModelMerger` only copies an existing value, and `DefaultModelValidator`
rejects a `status` set in a project POM. The `maven.mdo` description ("updated
by tools placing it in the repository") is therefore misleading for Maven
itself.
I can send a PR that rewords the description to say Maven does not maintain
the field and that it is only meaningful to repository tooling. Deprecating it
would be a model change, so I'd leave that to the maintainers. Which do you
prefer?
