@noremac To be honest, I don't recall specifically what I ended up doing. 
(edit: I was thinking this was a different issue when I responded :D)

I was able to do tests, but I did so using the maven-invoker-plugin calling a 
series of full test projects.

forth on this, we ended up feeling that the things this plugin is trying to 
solve aren't really the same as what we were trying to do, so I ended up
