I don't think I understood you correctly here. It sounds like you are saying 
that every API that returns a {{Future}} ought to be a separate thread? Since 
basically everything returns a {{Future}}, that doesn't seem practical.

My intention with this ticket was to address the specific case of the process 
reaper, not the general case of libprocess being able to guarantee forward 
progress. The question of whether the HDFS client really needs to block is also 
a separate JIRA IMHO.
