I'm going to close this issue since there is a PR with review that confirms it 
addresses the issue which has now been merged.  But the original PR is still 
there.  I'll assume lazy consensus regarding that initial one given the amount 
of time that has passed but if there is some disagreement we can reopen and 
discuss further.  Thanks all for participating in this thread/jira/contrib 
cycle.
