If you no longer have that first default bitmap 'Blank' you may do as Regina says or just create one with a graphic editor and import it. If it has the format described above (file format is not important) it will activate the pattern editor. Yes, it would be nice to have a button like 'new pattern...' which would add such a bitmap, sigh. Maybe this would be a nice feature; OTOH that pattern editor is pretty old stuff; it is from times where it was difficult to start a pixel editor as a 2nd program and just copy/paste what you need from there. This has really changed, so I would even think about if that pattern editor is still needed.
