A date is also only a number but have the format of a date.
The (internal) number for 01.05.2014 is 41760.
Lets have the first cell this date and the next are numbers (days).
SUM( 01.05.2014; 5; 12) = 18.05.2014 (= 41760 + 17 = 41777)
For your application it may be not expected, but you can simply resize the area
fur SUM.
